Jean Johnson

Sashiko-ori table runner. The charcoal plain weave background is 8/2 unmercerized cotton; heavier 8/4 cotton in white is used for the pattern ends. The warp and weft pattern floats were created as the cloth was woven.

These remaining samples were woven with 8/2 cotton in white as background and 8/2 cotton in dark navy for pattern ends. Vertical warp floats and horizontal weft floats forming the Ju pattern (staggered plus signs) and the alternating bars and dashes were created on the loom. Additional patterning was added off loom by incorporating diagonal hand stitching using the 8/2 navy thread.
