During the year guild members participate in a variety of Challenges & Exchanges which are optional fun learning experiences. We also have groups projects, like the current Twill Gamp Sampling Project.
Examples of challenges and exchanges that the guild members have participated in recently include:
- The Beast in a Bag Challenge in which members place unwanted yarn in a brown paper bag. The bags are then exchanged and the recipient of the bag must weave something with the contents of the bag to return to the owner of the yarn by the end of the challenge time period. This challenge promotes some very interesting and creative weaving!
- The Four Card Draw Challenge in which a member randomly draws 4 cards that represent a weave structure, a color way, a fiber content, and a finishing technique which they then must apply to a finished project. This challenge encourages members to work outside their normal weaving choices.
- A Project Exchange in which every participant weaves 4 items and to exchange for 4 items woven by 4 different weavers. Each year the item chosen to exchange is different. For example, it could be napkins, towels, mug mats, or placemats.
Current Challenges and Projects
2026 Poem Challenge
At the December 2025 meeting, members were challenged to create a project based on a poem. While members may choose whatever poem they wish, the poem “Instructions on Not Giving Up” by Ada Limón was shared as a possibility.
Twill Gamp Sampling Project
- A small twill gamp is ready for your practice, on a 4-shaft Harrisville loom in the Room 1 at TFAC. It is threaded for blocks of straight twill, broken twill, Rosepath and Bird’s eye. There are many other possibilities (e.g., tromp as writ).
- Please be sure to weave about an inch at the end of your sample so there will be room to cut and zigzag and place a tag with your name on the side of your work. Make notes of what you are weaving as you change the treadling and take that with you to go with the sample when it is returned to you.
- Please let us know if you have other ideas for a participatory gamp.
