Congratulations to TWG member Paula Baumann for having her work “Scorched Earth” selected as part of the Handweaving Guild of America’s Small Expressions exhibit.

“Small Expressions is an annual juried exhibition showcasing contemporary small-scale works (not to exceed 15 inches in any direction) using fiber techniques in any media. Small in scale but visually compelling, HGA’s Small Expressions exhibit features work that speaks to the intricacy of expression, intimacy of design, thoughtful communication, and visual excitement. The artists in this exhibit create a big impact through small pieces” (https://www.handweavers.org/)
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Scorched Earth interprets the angst that I feel for our future given the individual and national lack of commitment to reducing global warming. It represents my fear that the beautiful trees in my backyard forest will be devoured by fire should a lightning strike hit during a drought. Of course, it also speaks to the agony of those who experience lost homes due to fire and floods, as well as those whose livelihoods are crushed by fire across the world. It also exemplifies my concern for those with poor health due to coal burning and pollution.
TECHNIQUE:
The piece is knotted around a Styrofoam ball core. The design is created by knotting size 4 waxed linen around size 7 waxed linen using a variety of colors. The number of knots is approximately 25,000 based on knots per inch and estimated cycles around the ball. The piece is then mounted on a metal shaft on a stand. Two small partial mockups were also completed to test design and color combinations. The circumference of the piece is 18 inches at the widest.
