The Warpsters Study Group began a new challenge and exchange in the winter of 2019. The plan was to weave small mats in rep weave to exchange with each other.
The criteria were as follows:
- Fibers and colors were also weaver’s choice
- Each weaver was to weave 4 mats
- The weave structure would be rep weave
- Mats should be approximately 10″ x 10″
- Pattern was weaver’s choice
During the year we talked about our plans, our challenges, and our choices. Our exchange took place in January of 2020.
Each weaver faced challenges with their own project. The most daunting was the discovery that small floor looms do not necessarily handle very tight setts well.
We used several books and journals as resources:
- Rep Rips Reps Weave by Lucienne Coifman
- Rep Weave and Beyond by Joanne Tallarovic
- Rep by Catharina Carlstedt
- Handwoven Magazine
Each weaver made their own choices for warp yarns and sett, pattern, colors, thick and thin wefts, and hemming. Not too many mats ended up being 10″ x 10″ or even particularly square. No two mats were identical as each weaver experimented with different treadling patterns. But all of the mats were beautiful!
The 28 mats were divided into 7 piles of 4 mats each, and each weaver took a pile that did not contain a mat that they had woven.
