Tapestry Study Group Regroups

—

The Thursday Morning Tapestry Study Group met for the last time before summer break this month, and is looking forward to regathering in the Fall with new projects, more questions, and more topics to investigate. This was a lively Zoom meeting with questions flying (How do you….? What if you….?) and answers shared. Tapestry is a slow process, and often as we gather we don’t have a new project, or even headway on an old one, but we always learn from one another and leave inspired to work at our craft.

Jo Ann Burden has used a tapestry sampler to make a pin cushion with pocket to hold smaller tapestry paraphernalia.

Recently we’ve added a twist with a monthly technique challenge. While entirely optional, it gives focus to our learning, and generates a bunch of “What if…”s for further investigation, whether we find the time between meetings to weave, or not. This month’s topic is irregular hatching. In fact, that has been the topic for the last three months. It could be the topic for awhile!

Carol Lerner practiced irregular hatching in two formats, square and golden section rectangle.

Beth Harvat is working on a piece based on a Christmas card she has admired.

Beth’s process has involved taking the design and adapting it to the grid structure of tapestry.  This requires a degree of simplification – something difficult for so many of us!  As our discussion turned to this question and the future for the group, we brainstormed a scenario of helping each other translate our beloved source materials into weaving projects.  And a world of possibilities opens . . .
This Study Group is open to all, even if you are just starting out. (We can get you started. And hooked!)  Or, if you have been weaving tapestry for years, come on out and share your wisdom.  In exchange, you may gain some inspiration, maybe some new ideas, but always some contagious enthusiasm!
The Thursday Morning Tapestry Study Group meets the first Thursday of the month from 9:30 to 11:30, normally at TFAC.  Contact Carol Lerner at clerner44@gmail.com to receive monthly info.
